This piano suffered smoke and water damage in a house fire. Original finish was high gloss ivory. While I am not a “refinisher”, I’m not apt to shy away from a challenge. Following the advice of a colleague from Pennsylvania, I used various compounds to clean and polish the finish to its original sheen. The risk of rubbing through the finish was real so I had to proceed judiciously. I also was tasked with restringing the instrument. Rather than refinishing the plate, I was able to clean and hand rub its finish as well. I seemed to have neglected to take photos of the process this time but the following pictures show the stark difference of before and after.
